About the NewburgThe Newburg Inn has been standing in it's original location for almost 260 years. Almost 3 centuries old, this historical landmark has served many purposes. This building's story is a major chapter of today's society. As a matter of fact, it has been known not only as the restaurant and inn it is today, but as an Indian Trading Post, a Stagecoach Stop, and a well-known tavern of it's time. The name Newburg came from colonial times when pioneers would emerge from the valley with an overwhelming fear of it's intimidating location. Truth be told, the roof of the building still holds an Indian hatch which was used to pick off approaching enemies and fortify this outstanding terrain. Who knows what tomorrow has in store for this magnificent landmark?
Indian behind the BarLook closely between the two pillars behind the bar. It looks as though a human with long hair is watching us walk around! |
Newburg's ClaimsOver the years, there have been numerous claims of unknown activity. As a result, owner Lou Basta called in CLPS in an attempt to uncover the truth. In 13 years of building ownership, Lou has only ever had a few personal experiences; however, his employees and other associates have reported a vast myriad of encounters. Overall, the majority of the claims have been visual and auditory. Along with researching the building's past, CLPS took into consideration the claims of three Newburg associates: Lou, Mary, and Cindy. Lou has told us about his few personal experiences. These included hearing footsteps on the roof of the building, and hearing a disconnected phone ringing in his office. But, Lou's most vivid memory and report was that of a large apparition standing beside him as he was getting ready to lock up for the night. We then were introduced to Mary and Cindy. Mary is a waitress and Cindy is a dishwasher. Cindy has also been a resident of the Newburg Inn for nearly 10 years. Mary told us of 2 breathtaking moments. During dinner hours one evening, Mary turned to see a dark figure, about waist high, dart in front of her. Another evening, she saw a white reflection walk by the mirror near the bar. Cindy has been a lifeline of information for us. She has told us of apparitions, footsteps, and voices at the Newburg Inn. She has also claimed to speak with the ghosts on a one to one basis. Overall, it was quite apparent to us that we needed to keep all eyes and ears open.

The Investigation CLPS came prepared for a busy six hours. After the Newburg Inn closed its doors for the night, four of our investigators began to do what they do best: hunt for Newburg's ghosts. We set the scene of our investigation based on the claims of activity throughout the building. In light of the stories provided to us by Lou and his employees, we thought that keeping one group on the first floor at all times made the most sense. So, this three level construction had one team on the upper two levels, while the other group remained on the first level. We also remembered to constantly rotate our groups. We felt that this was a good way for everyone to stay fresh, and it set the scene for a new approach on a case with so many visual and auditory experiences. By rearranging groups and changing locations, we hoped to maximize the teams' skill sets. We divided this six hour conquest into four quarters. They were as follows: 1st quarter- Oscar and Joe first floor, Marissa and Jaime second floor; 2nd quarter- Oscar and Joe second floor, Marissa and Jaime first floor; 3rd quarter- Marissa and Joe first floor, Jaime and Oscar second floor; 4th quarter- Everyone on the first floor. We did an initial EMF walk-around to check for high electromagnetic fields and spikes. We noticed that the second floor had EMF illusion written all over it. Though the first floor had nowhere near the amount of high readings, we noticed a huge difference in temperature. Walking from one level to another was like going from Alaska straight to Arizona. There was no mistake that the upstairs had no air conditioning. CLPS did everything humanly possible to attempt to dissprove all of the claims. However, personal experiences always seemed to drag us away from whatever we were focusing on. All of the investigators had felt as if they were the entertainment for a group of people. The feel of the place was unlike most investigations. Whatever was there was certainly trying to keep it's distance; at least thats how it appeared to us. After six hours of feeling like children playing hide and seek, we decided to let our equipment prove it's abilities. Knowing we did the best we could hands-on, reviewing over sixty hours of footage felt promising. If Newburg truly is the home to a ghost, we caught it!

The Debriefing
CLPS was thrilled to have the opportunity to investigate the 260 year old Newburg Inn. It was surely a hot topic for us. Just the fact that the building has seen almost 3 centuries is an accomplishment all in itself. We were received with much enthusiasm from Lou and his employees, and working with them has been more than an honor, it has been a privilege as well. If we were ever asked to revisit the Newburg in the future, no thought would need to go into a response from us. It was a rewarding case for CLPS all around. Not only did we walk away with a bunch of evidence and personal experiences, but we gained a friendship as well. In the field of paranormal investigating, friendships and well-respected clients are the keys to successful stories. As far as the investigation of the Newburg Inn goes, what else can be said beyond what has already been said? I guess the only thing left to say is, "Yes, the Newburg Inn is HAUNTED!!!"
